Poole is one of the most distinctive environments for tree management on the South Coast, and the factors that make it distinctive are genuinely relevant to how trees behave and what they need here.

The town sits around the largest natural harbour in the UK, and the influence of that harbour on the local environment is significant. The tidal water, salt air and prevailing south-westerly winds that move across Poole Harbour affect trees across a wide area of the town – particularly in the lower-lying residential areas of Hamworthy, Upton and the Harbour-facing streets of Parkstone and Lilliput. Salt air gradually degrades leaf surfaces and weakens branch structure over time, making crown management and deadwood removal more important for trees in these areas than in locations further inland.

The soil across much of Poole – particularly across Canford Heath, Bearwood and the residential areas built on the heathland fringe – is the free-draining, acidic sandy soil characteristic of the Dorset heathlands. This soil produces fast root growth but shallow anchorage, meaning trees in these areas are more vulnerable to wind-related uprooting during storms than the same species would be in heavier clay soil. Sandbanks and the Harbour peninsula present their own specific challenges. The combination of exposed coastal position, very sandy soil and high property values creates a situation where tree work needs to be carried out with particular precision – both to protect surrounding properties and to ensure that trees providing screening and shelter value are managed carefully rather than simply removed.
