Tree Surgeons Across
South Hampshire

Clearcut Tree Surgery provides professional tree surgery across South Hampshire — covering the New Forest National Park, the Avon and Test valleys, the Solent coast and the market towns and villages between the Hampshire-Dorset border and Southampton. Our base on the Dorset-Hampshire boundary means we are well-positioned to serve the whole of this area with the same response times as our core Bournemouth and Dorset coverage.

South Hampshire presents a tree surgery environment unlike anywhere else in the south of England. The New Forest is one of the most ecologically significant landscapes in Europe — a working forest that has been managed continuously since the Norman Conquest. The ancient oaks, beeches and veteran trees of the open forest are protected by a complex web of designations: National Park status, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and in some cases individual TPOs and scheduled monument protections covering the wider forest character.

Outside the National Park boundary, the Avon Valley from Fordingbridge south to Christchurch Harbour carries significant riverside tree populations — willows, alders and crack willows along England's finest chalk-fed river system. The Test Valley to the north and east has estate parkland with mature specimen trees. The Solent coast from Lymington to New Milton has wind-shaped coastal trees requiring specialist knowledge of their structural behaviour.

All tree planning applications within the New Forest National Park boundary are handled by the New Forest National Park Authority — not Hampshire County Council or New Forest District Council. We have direct experience working within National Park planning frameworks and advise on the correct authority at every site visit. Call 01202 022560 for a free no-obligation quote.

Why Hampshire demands specialist knowledge
New Forest National ParkA completely separate planning authority from Hampshire County Council. Tree work within the park boundary is assessed against National Park policies — we know the system and manage all applications on your behalf.
Ancient woodland & veteran treesThe New Forest's ancient oaks and beeches require a fundamentally different approach to modern plantation trees — both in terms of safe working method and planning sensitivity.
Avon Valley watercourse consentsThe Avon is a nationally important chalk river. Trees on or near its banks may require Environment Agency notification alongside any council consent. We identify and manage all requirements.
NPTC qualified, £5M insuredFull qualifications and insurance documentation available before any work begins across South Hampshire. Our team's experience spans both domestic and large estate work throughout the area.

South Hampshire —
Three Distinct
Tree Environments

From the ancient woodland of the New Forest to the chalk streams of the Avon and the coastal properties of the Solent — each of South Hampshire's landscapes has its own tree stock, its own planning framework and its own practical challenges.

New Forest National Park

The New Forest is England's newest National Park and one of the largest remaining areas of ancient semi-natural woodland in North-West Europe. The open forest — Inclosures, Ancient and Ornamental Woodland, lawns and bogs — is managed by the Forestry England on behalf of the Crown, but the surrounding villages, farms and private properties within the park boundary fall under New Forest National Park Authority planning jurisdiction for tree consents.

Properties within the park boundary frequently have trees that have grown to exceptional size — ancient oaks with trunk diameters exceeding a metre are not unusual in some parts of the forest fringe. These trees require arborists with both the equipment and the knowledge to work safely and sensitively within one of England's most protected landscapes.

Avon Valley & Market Town Fringe

The River Avon enters Hampshire at Fordingbridge and flows south through Ringwood to Christchurch Harbour. The floodplains, water meadows and riverside woodlands of this nationally important chalk river system contain willows, alders, black poplar and veteran crack willows. The market towns on the valley edge — Ringwood and Fordingbridge — have mature residential tree populations in both conservation areas and the wider built environment.

Work near the Avon requires careful identification of Environment Agency notification requirements alongside any New Forest District Council consent. The Avon is one of England's best remaining chalk rivers — protected under the EU Water Framework Directive — and its riparian trees have significant ecological value.

Solent Coastal Strip

The coastal strip from Lymington through New Milton and Barton-on-Sea to the Hampshire-Dorset border has a distinctive tree character — properties are exposed to south-westerly winds off the Solent, and trees are typically maritime-tolerant species including holm oak, Monterey cypress, Scots pine and salt-hardened deciduous specimens. Cliff-top properties require assessment of root stability in addition to standard safe working method planning.

New Forest District Council handles planning consents for this coastal area — including Lymington, New Milton and Barton. Many older properties along this strip have significant ornamental trees planted by the Victorian and Edwardian gentry who developed the area as a desirable seaside setting.

Tree Consents in
South Hampshire
Know Your Authority

South Hampshire is served by several planning authorities for tree work — and getting the right one matters. Submitting a Tree Preservation Order application to the wrong council will cause delays, and in some cases authorities will simply reject applications that fall outside their jurisdiction.

The critical distinction is the New Forest National Park boundary. This boundary runs through what can seem like a continuous landscape — the town of Ringwood, for example, sits largely outside the National Park boundary, while the village of Burley, just a few miles to the north-east, sits well within it. The correct authority for tree consents changes depending on which side of the line your property falls.

We check your property's planning authority as the first step at every site visit in Hampshire — before any quote is finalised. For any work within the National Park boundary, we manage all applications with the New Forest National Park Authority directly. For properties outside the park, we deal with New Forest District Council or the appropriate local authority.

New Forest National Park Authority Within Park Boundary

Handles all tree planning consents for properties within the National Park boundary — including TPO applications, Conservation Area notifications and general arboricultural advice. The National Park has additional landscape character policies that go beyond standard TPO legislation. Properties in Burley, Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Beaulieu, Fordingbridge (part) and all forest-fringe villages within the boundary fall under NFNPA jurisdiction.

New Forest District Council Outside Park Boundary

Covers the towns and villages outside the National Park boundary — including Ringwood (most of), Fordingbridge (most of), Lymington, New Milton, Barton-on-Sea, Milford-on-Sea, Hordle and Sway. TPO applications and Conservation Area notifications for these areas go to NFDC's planning team.

Hampshire County Council & Others

Hampshire County Council is not a planning authority for individual tree consents — TPOs in Hampshire are handled by district and borough councils. Winchester City Council, Eastleigh Borough Council and Test Valley Borough Council cover other parts of Hampshire beyond our primary South Hampshire coverage area. We advise on the correct authority wherever your property sits.

Trusted by homeowners and landowners across South Hampshire and the New Forest

"Property in Burley, within the National Park. Clearcut knew exactly that the application had to go to the New Forest National Park Authority — not the district council — and managed it without me having to do anything. Work was excellent too."

Oliver & Charlotte P.
Burley, New Forest National Park

"Old cottage on the Avon at Ringwood — large willow overhanging the river. Clearcut came out, identified the Environment Agency requirement alongside the NFDC consent and managed both. The work near the water was done carefully and professionally."

Helen & David W.
Ringwood, Avon Valley

"Detached house in Lymington with three large holm oaks — salt-damaged and one beginning to lean. Clearcut assessed them carefully, removed the dangerous one and reduced the other two. Understood the coastal conditions perfectly. Very impressed."
