Tree Felling in Bournemouth & Dorset — Done Right

Tree felling is one of the highest-risk operations in arboriculture — carried out badly, it causes serious injury to people, damage to property and destruction of surrounding vegetation. Carried out correctly by an NPTC-qualified arborist with the right equipment and planning, it is a controlled, precise operation that leaves your site exactly as intended.

Clearcut Tree Surgery carries out tree felling across Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset and Hampshire using three methods depending on the tree's size, location and surrounding constraints: straight felling where sufficient clearance exists, sectional dismantling for trees near buildings or in confined gardens, and crane-assisted removal for the most complex removals in tight urban spaces.

Before any felling work begins, we identify whether your tree carries a Tree Preservation Order or falls within a Conservation Area — both common across Dorset and Bournemouth. Where consent is required, we manage the full application with Dorset Council or BCP Council on your behalf before a chainsaw is touched.

After felling, all timber is sectioned, chipped or removed to your specification. Stumps are ground below surface level using our tracked Predator grinder. Your site is left exactly as agreed — nothing left behind. Call 01202 022560 for a free no-obligation quote anywhere in Dorset.

Our felling qualifications

NPTC CS30 — Chainsaw Maintenance & CrosscuttingCurrent certification held by all chainsaw operators on every job.

NPTC PA1/PA6 — Climbing & Aerial RescueRequired for sectional dismantling — working at height in trees with full rescue competency.
City & Guilds ArboricultureFormal arboricultural qualification underpinning all practical work — not just chainsaw certification.
£5M Public Liability InsuranceFull cover for all tree felling operations. Documentation available before any work begins on site.

Three Methods.
One Right Choice
for Your Tree

The method we use depends entirely on your tree's size, location and what's around it. We assess every tree individually — never a one-size-fits-all approach.

Straight Felling

The most efficient method where sufficient clearance exists. The tree is notched and felled in a predetermined direction using precise back cuts, felling wedges and, where needed, a pull rope or hand winch to ensure the tree falls exactly where intended.

Used for: open farmland, woodland, large gardens and rural sites with enough space for the tree to fall safely without risk to structures or adjacent vegetation.

Best for open rural and agricultural sites

Sectional Dismantling

The tree is removed piece by piece from the top downwards using a qualified climber with full aerial rescue competency. Each section is either lowered on a rope and rigging system or thrown clear into a predetermined drop zone, depending on what's below.

Used for: trees near houses, fences, parked cars, overhead cables or in confined gardens across Bournemouth and Dorset where a straight fell would damage surrounding property.

Best for residential & confined spaces

Crane-Assisted Removal

For the most constrained sites, sections are removed by crane — eliminating ground impact entirely. The arborist cuts each section while it is held under tension by the crane, allowing precision extraction from sites that climbing and rigging alone cannot safely handle.

Used for: trees directly over conservatories, in enclosed courtyards, over ornamental gardens, or where any ground-level impact would cause unacceptable damage. Common in Bournemouth's older residential areas.

Best for complex urban & constrained sites

Common Trees We
Fell Across Dorset

Different tree species have different structural properties, wood densities and felling behaviours. Our qualified arborists understand how each species behaves under the saw — and plan accordingly.

Oak Common in Dorset

Oak is one of the densest native hardwoods and one of the most commonly protected by Tree Preservation Orders in Dorset. Large, spreading oaks require careful planning of the felling direction and significant equipment for extraction. Many oaks in Dorset have substantial canopy spread that must be accounted for in the felling plan. We assess lean, crown weight distribution and root structure before any cuts are made.

Ash Ash Dieback Affected

Ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) has affected a significant proportion of ash trees across Dorset and Hampshire. Diseased ash becomes structurally unpredictable — internal decay is not always visible from ground level, and dead wood can detach without warning. Felling ash affected by dieback requires specialist assessment, additional safety measures and — depending on crown condition — may require sectional dismantling rather than straight felling even where space appears available.

Leylandii & Conifers Common in Gardens

Leylandii, Scots pine, Western red cedar and Norway spruce are among the most frequently felled trees in Dorset's domestic gardens. Conifers generally do not carry TPOs but can be very large — mature leylandii can reach 20–30 metres and require sectional dismantling in most residential settings. The root systems of large conifers spread considerably wider than the canopy, and stump grinding is essential to prevent regrowth and remove trip hazards.

Beech, Sycamore & Lime Urban & Estate Trees

Beech, sycamore and lime are common in Bournemouth's older residential areas, park settings and along Dorset's estate drives. Beech is particularly susceptible to structural failure in hot, dry conditions and often requires earlier intervention than other species. All three frequently carry TPOs in Bournemouth and Dorset — we check TPO status and manage all consent applications before any work proceeds. Stump grinding is usually recommended after felling, as these species will sucker or regenerate vigorously from the stump if left.

Felling & Planning
Permission in Dorset

One of the most important things to establish before felling any tree in Dorset or Bournemouth is whether consent is required. Getting this wrong is a criminal offence under the Town and Country Planning Act — the fines are unlimited and prosecutions do happen.

We check TPO status and Conservation Area boundaries during our initial site visit for every tree felling job we quote. If consent is required, we advise you on the process and manage the complete application with Dorset Council (covering rural Dorset) or BCP Council (covering Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch) on your behalf.

Consent turnaround times vary — TPO applications typically take 8 weeks, Conservation Area notifications require 6 weeks' notice. We factor this into your job timeline from the first visit, so there are no delays once work is approved to start.

Never assume a tree is unprotected without checking. If you're unsure, call us on 01202 022560 and we'll advise before you do anything.

No TPO, not in Conservation Area Most trees can be felled without consent. We still carry out a due diligence check before any work begins — particularly for mature or notable trees.
Within a Conservation Area Trees over 75mm diameter at 1.5m height require 6 weeks' written notice to Dorset Council or BCP Council before any work. We submit this notification and manage the response on your behalf.
Tree Preservation Order (TPO) Full application required before any felling, pruning or major works. Timescales are typically 8 weeks. Felling without consent risks unlimited fines and an obligation to replant. We manage the entire process.
Dangerous tree exemption Where a protected tree poses an immediate risk to life or property, emergency works can proceed — but must be reported to the council immediately afterwards. We handle this notification on the same day as the emergency work.

Cost depends on the tree's height, girth, species and method required. A small garden tree may cost a few hundred pounds while a large crane-assisted removal in a confined Bournemouth garden will be significantly more. We provide free no-obligation site visits and written quotes. Call 01202 022560.
Possibly. Trees with a Tree Preservation Order require full consent from Dorset Council or BCP Council before felling. Trees in Conservation Areas require 6 weeks' prior notification. We check TPO and Conservation Area status at every site visit and manage all applications on your behalf. Felling without consent is a criminal offence with unlimited fines.
Tree felling means cutting the tree at the base and controlling its fall direction. Tree dismantling — or sectional felling — involves removing the tree in sections from the top down using a climber, used where a straight fell would risk damage to surrounding structures. We assess which method is appropriate at the site visit.
We can remove all timber from site, chip it on site for mulch, or leave logs cut to your specification for firewood — whichever suits you. Stumps can be ground to below ground level using our tracked Predator grinder. The site is left exactly as agreed at the time of quoting.
Yes. All chainsaw operators hold current NPTC CS30 and CS31 felling certificates. Climbers hold NPTC PA1/PA6 climbing and aerial rescue qualifications. All arborists are City & Guilds qualified. We carry £5 million public liability insurance. Full documentation provided before any work begins.
