"Large Cedar of Lebanon in our Tisbury garden — in the AONB and with a TPO. Clearcut understood the planning context, submitted to Wiltshire Council correctly and the crown reduction was done beautifully. Outstanding work."

Coverage Areas
Salisbury
Wiltshire Council · Cathedral CityExtensive Conservation Area covering the cathedral close, market place and surrounding streets. Cathedral Close contains some of the most significant trees in Wiltshire — mature planes, limes and cedars with considerable TPO designation. River Avon riparian trees on the city's green corridor.
Amesbury
Wiltshire Council · Salisbury PlainThe largest town on Salisbury Plain, positioned on the River Avon. Chalk-rooted trees, Avon riparian willows, and the open downland fringe give the area a distinctive tree stock. World Heritage Site buffer zone adds further planning sensitivity to prominent trees near the Stonehenge landscape.
Wilton
Wiltshire Council · Estate TownHistoric estate town at the junction of the Wyle and Nadder valleys. Wilton House parkland provides a wooded backdrop. The town's Conservation Area and the estate's mature parkland trees create a significant TPO tree population in and around the town.
Tisbury
Wiltshire Council · Nadder ValleyNadder Valley village in the Cranborne Chase AONB, surrounded by ancient estate woodland and hedgerow oaks. Many of the significant trees in and around Tisbury date from the Georgian and Victorian estate improvements. Chalk and greensand soils on the valley sides support a rich mixed tree stock.
Mere
Wiltshire Council · Chalk RidgeSmall market town on the chalk ridge at the Dorset/Wiltshire/Somerset boundary. The town's Conservation Area and surrounding farms sit within the Cranborne Chase AONB. Notable veteran oaks on the farmland boundaries; chalk-rooted beeches on the exposed ridge.
Warminster
Wiltshire Council · West WiltshireMarket town on the western chalk scarp, at the foot of Salisbury Plain. Established residential oaks and limes in the older streets; wooded river corridor along the Wylye. The Longleat estate provides a wooded landscape context to the south. Wiltshire Council planning throughout.
The Wiltshire tree landscape
Three Distinct Landscapes —
Three Soil Characters
Chalk Downland
The dominant landscape of south Wiltshire — the chalk that underlies Salisbury Plain and the valleys that radiate from Salisbury. Chalk soils are free-draining, alkaline and highly fertile, supporting mature beech, oak, ash and field maple. Trees on chalk develop deep tap roots seeking moisture through the chalk, which affects both stability assessment and the risk of failure during drought. Chalk also shrinks and swells less dramatically than clay, giving relatively predictable ground conditions year-round.
River Avon Corridor
The Hampshire Avon flows north to south through Salisbury, Amesbury and down towards the New Forest. This chalk-fed river supports crack willows, white willows, alder and black poplar along its banks and carriers. Trees on or adjacent to the Avon are subject to Environment Agency byelaws governing vegetation on main rivers, in addition to any Wiltshire Council planning requirements. We advise on both at the site visit.
Cranborne Chase & Nadder Valley
The Cranborne Chase AONB covers a broad swath of south Wiltshire from Tisbury and Mere eastwards. This is ancient chase country — mixed woodland, veteran oaks on the hedgerow boundaries, beech hangers on the escarpment and the greensand and clay-with-flints of the valley sides supporting a rich and varied tree stock. Many parishes in this area have Conservation Areas with significant tree populations. AONB designation increases the landscape weight given to prominent trees in planning decisions.
Salisbury Plain Edge
The farmland fringe of Salisbury Plain around Amesbury is exposed, open and frequently windswept — producing trees with strong wind-trained form and asymmetric crowns. The World Heritage Site buffer zone around Stonehenge adds a layer of planning consideration for prominent trees in the open downland visible from the monument. We are aware of these overlapping designations and advise on their implications at the site visit.

Tree Planning Explained
Who is the planning authority in Wiltshire?
Wiltshire Council is the unitary planning authority for the whole county — there are no district or borough councils in Wiltshire. All TPO applications and Conservation Area tree notifications go to Wiltshire Council regardless of location within the county.
Conservation Areas: Salisbury has a large and complex Conservation Area covering the cathedral close, market place and many surrounding streets. Most Wiltshire villages of any historical significance — including Tisbury, Mere, Wilton, Hindon and many others — have Conservation Areas. Trees over 75mm trunk diameter within a Conservation Area require six weeks' notice to Wiltshire Council before work, even without a TPO.
Cranborne Chase AONB: The AONB adds landscape sensitivity to planning decisions in designated areas, but does not in itself restrict tree work. TPO and Conservation Area rules apply as normal within the AONB.
Salisbury Plain: MOD land and the World Heritage Site buffer zone create additional planning sensitivity for prominent landscape trees in these areas. We confirm all designations at the site visit.
Dorset/Wiltshire boundary: Properties near the county boundary — around Shaftesbury, Mere and the Chase — need careful authority confirmation. We confirm the correct authority for all boundary-zone properties at the site visit.
