Tractor flailing in short
A flail is a cutting head with fast-spinning blades on chains or hinges, mounted on a tractor arm. It cuts and shreds hedgerow growth, grass, brambles and light scrub in one pass, leaving the cuttings as mulch. It is the quickest way to keep long field hedges, verges, tracks and paddock edges under control. Hedgerows are flailed outside the nesting season.

Flailing hedgerows, verges and land
A tractor and flail does in an hour what would take a team days by hand.
Hedgerows along fields, lanes and drives are cut on the sides and top to a tidy, even shape. Cutting every year, or every other year, keeps a hedge thick and stock-proof. Leaving some hedges uncut in alternate years gives more flowers and berries for wildlife.
Verges, tracks and rides are kept clear for vehicles, walkers and horses.
Overgrown paddocks and land with rough grass, brambles and young scrub are flailed back to ground level, often as the first stage of land clearance.
Farm hedgerows are protected by law from cutting between 1 March and 31 August, and we never flail where birds are nesting.
