Environmental policy Looking after what we work in

Trees are our living. This policy sets out how we protect wildlife, recycle what we cut, reduce our emissions and leave every site, and every landscape, better looked after.

A Clearcut team working on a row of trees in a park

Our environmental policy in short

Clearcut Tree Surgery Ltd is committed to carrying out tree work in a way that protects wildlife and habitats, recycles every part of the trees we cut, reduces fuel use and emissions, and follows the law and best practice. Around 96% of our timber becomes firewood, the rest becomes woodchip, mulch and heat, and nothing goes to landfill. This policy applies to everyone who works for us and is reviewed every year.

Our commitments

Wildlife and habitats

We check trees and hedges for nesting birds before work, as the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 requires, and stop or reschedule if a nest is in use. We look for signs of bats, which are protected, and stop and seek specialist advice if they may be present. Deadwood habitat is kept where it is safe to do so.

Pruning, not removal

Where a tree can be kept safely with pruning, we recommend pruning. We only recommend removal when a tree is dead, dangerous, causing damage, or in the wrong place, and we advise on replanting.

Recycling everything

Timber becomes firewood through our sister company, Woodland Firewood. Brash becomes woodchip and mulch, some donated to allotments, schools and community projects. Unsellable timber fuels a biomass boiler that heats local homes and offices.

Fuel and emissions

Chipping on site means fewer journeys. We plan routes to group jobs by area, keep machinery serviced for efficiency, and replace kit with cleaner models as it comes up for renewal.

Pollution prevention

Fuel and oil are stored and handled to prevent spills, with spill kits carried on our vehicles. We use biodegradable chain oil where suitable and clean up any spill straight away.

Protected trees and the law

We check for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas before work and make applications on our customers' behalf. We never work on a protected tree without consent.

Planting

We plant trees for customers, estates and developers, and replace trees where the council requires it, choosing native and climate-resilient species suited to the site.

Woodland management

Our woodland work follows good forestry practice: thinning to improve the trees that remain, protecting watercourses and ground, and replanting gaps.

How it works on a job

  1. 1

    Before work

Check for TPOs, conservation areas, nesting birds, bats and other wildlife, and plan the job to protect the ground and nearby plants.

  2. 2

    During work

Chip on site, keep fuel and oil contained, protect lawns and borders, and keep noise to working hours.

  3. 3

    After work

Every bit of waste recycled, the site left clean, and advice given on aftercare and replanting.

Responsibility and review

This policy is owned by the director and applies to everyone who works for Clearcut.

Every member of the team is briefed on this policy and on wildlife checks as part of their training, and is expected to raise any concern about a job's impact before work starts.

We are registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier (CBDU489751) and comply with the waste duty of care.

We review this policy every year, and whenever the law, our work or our equipment changes. Customers, residents and suppliers are welcome to send us questions or suggestions about it through our contact page.

Environment questions

Anything not covered here? Ask us and we'll give you a straight answer.

Ask us a question

Do you cut hedges and trees in nesting season?
Only after checking for active nests. Nesting season runs roughly from March to August, and it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest in use. If birds are nesting, the work waits.
What happens to the wood from my tree?
Around 96% of our timber becomes firewood; the rest becomes woodchip, mulch and heat. None goes to landfill.
Do you plant trees as well as remove them?
Yes. We plant and replace trees, and recommend replanting whenever a tree has to come down.

Max came out on a very wet day and within 2 hours of initially calling him. Gave his expert advice and opinion, and although couldn’t do the job, due to the tree being on council highway, Max gave me the contact of the councils approved contractor to carry out a pollard. I wouldn’t hesitate in using Max for any future work at my property.
