Size and type of tree
A taller, wider tree has more to cut, lower and clear. Some species, like dense conifers, take longer.
No two trees are priced the same. This guide explains what actually decides the cost of tree work, so you can compare quotes properly and know what you're paying for.

The cost of tree work depends mainly on the size of the tree, how easy it is to get to, what is underneath it, how the waste is dealt with, and whether permission is needed. A small tree in an open garden with good access costs far less than a large tree over a house, a conservatory or power lines that has to be dismantled piece by piece. That is why reputable tree surgeons price every job on a visit and give you a written quote. Clearcut's quote visits are free.

Can a chipper get close, or does every branch have to be carried? Narrow side gates, steps and back gardens add time.
Over a lawn, a tree can be felled. Over a house, a greenhouse, power lines or a neighbour's garden, it has to be dismantled and lowered on ropes, which takes a bigger team and longer.
A light crown lift is quicker than a full reduction; a reduction is quicker than taking the tree down.
Chipping and taking the waste away is usually included. Keeping the logs for your fire can make a small difference.
Leaving the stump, grinding it out or treating it are different jobs at different prices.
If the tree has a TPO or is in a conservation area, the application needs preparing. We do it for you.
Roadside work and some big trees need a platform, signs, cones and a banksman.
The cheapest quote is often the one that leaves something out.
When you compare quotes, check they all cover the same work: the same trees, the same amount taken off, the waste removed, the stump dealt with, and the work done to BS3998.
Check the basics too: qualifications, insurance and a waste carrier licence. A low price from someone uninsured is no saving if something goes wrong. Our guide to choosing a tree surgeon has the full checklist.
We sit in the middle on price: not the cheapest, not the dearest. Our prices cover qualified teams, £5 million public liability insurance, professional kit and a site left clean.
