Grind it out
Best where a grinder can reach and you want the space back for lawn, planting or paving. The stump and surface roots are gone the same day.
Some trees won't take no for an answer: cut them down and the stump throws up new shoots and suckers. Where grinding isn't possible, we treat the stump so it stays dead.

Stump treatment stops a cut stump from regrowing. Many broadleaf trees and shrubs, including sycamore, willow, poplar, cherry and laurel, send up new shoots or suckers from the stump and roots after felling. Grinding the stump out is often the best answer, but where a grinder can't reach, the stump is against a wall, or it sits among roots of trees you want to keep, we treat it instead. Treatment is applied by our trained team with an approved product, at the right time, so the stump dies back and doesn't regrow.
A stump left to regrow becomes a multi-stemmed tree in a few years, often bigger and weaker than the one you took down.
Species like sycamore, willow, poplar, ash and cherry, and shrubs like laurel, respond to felling by sending up dozens of shoots from the stump and suckers from the roots, sometimes metres away across a lawn.
Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root plate, and is the best option where a grinder can get in. Where it can't, or where the stump sits close to walls, drains, cables or the roots of trees you want to keep, treatment is the safer choice.
We treat stumps as part of the felling job, while the cut is fresh, so the treatment is taken down into the roots. Treated stumps are left to rot down naturally, or can be ground out later once dead.

Best where a grinder can't get in, next to walls, drains or cables, or among roots of trees you're keeping. The stump stays but won't regrow.
On some jobs we treat first and grind later, once the stump and roots have died back.
