Romsey's tree landscape

Romsey is an ancient market town on the River Test — one of England's finest chalk streams. The town's position in the chalk valley gives it a distinctive tree stock: mature limes, planes and oaks in the town centre's Conservation Area, riverside crack willows, white willows and alders along the Test and its carriers, and the parkland trees of Broadlands estate to the south providing a wooded backdrop to the southern approach.

Romsey's Conservation Area is extensive and covers much of the historic town. Trees of significant size within this area require six weeks' notice to Test Valley Borough Council before any work, regardless of TPO status. We identify Conservation Area boundaries and TPOs at the site visit — an important step given the extent of Romsey's historic designations.

The River Test — riparian tree management

The Test is one of the most ecologically sensitive chalk rivers in southern England. Trees on or near its banks — willows and alders in particular — may require Environment Agency notification before work begins. We advise on EA requirements at the site visit alongside any TVBC planning considerations.

Planning — Test Valley Borough Council

Romsey falls under Test Valley Borough Council. All TPO and Conservation Area applications go to TVBC. We manage all applications directly.
