Tree dismantling in short
Tree dismantling, also called sectional tree removal, is how a tree is taken down where there is no room to fell it in one piece. A qualified climber works from the top down, cutting the tree into manageable sections. Each piece is tied off and lowered on ropes to the ground crew, who chip it straight away. It is how we remove most garden trees in Bournemouth, Poole and across Dorset.

What tree dismantling is and when you need it
Most trees in towns and gardens can't simply be cut at the base and left to fall. There is a house, a fence, a greenhouse or a road in the way.
Dismantling solves that. Instead of felling the tree in one go, a climber goes up on ropes and removes it piece by piece, starting with the outer branches and working down through the crown and then the trunk. Heavy sections are tied off with a lowering line and let down slowly by the ground crew, so each one lands exactly where it is meant to.
You need a tree dismantled rather than felled when:
- it stands within its own height of a building, a boundary or a road
- it leans over a roof, a conservatory, a shed or next door's garden
- there are phone lines, power cables or street lights near the crown
- the garden is fenced in, terraced or full of plants you want to keep
- the tree is dead, diseased or storm damaged and can't be trusted to fall cleanly
Where there is room for the tree to come down in one piece, straight felling is quicker and usually cheaper. We tell you which method your tree needs on the free visit.

How we take a tree down in sections
The same safe system on every job, from a small garden tree to a large oak beside a house.
- 1
Free visit and plan
We look at the tree, the access and what is underneath it, check for a TPO or conservation area, and give you a fixed written quote.
- 2
Set up and protect
On the day we fence off a work area, put boards over lawns and paths where needed and agree where the chipper and the timber will go.
- 3
Climb and rig
A qualified climber ascends on ropes and sets a lowering point high in the tree. A second climber or the ground crew stay ready at all times.
- 4
Remove the crown
Branches come off from the outside in. Heavy limbs are tied off and lowered on a rope controlled by the ground crew, so nothing swings into the house or next door.
- 5
Section the trunk
Once the crown is gone, the trunk is cut down in short, manageable pieces, each one lowered or dropped into a clear landing zone.
- 6
Chip, clear and grind
Brash goes through the chipper as we work, timber is cut and removed, and the stump can be ground out the same day. We sweep up before we leave.
Safe tree removal near buildings
The closer a tree is to a house, the more the method matters.
Our climbers plan each cut before they make it: which way the piece will move, how heavy it is and where it will land. On tight jobs we use a lowering line on almost every section, so the ground crew are in control rather than gravity.
Where a tree is too big or too awkward to climb, we can bring in crane-assisted removal, lifting whole sections over the house and onto the drive or the road.
When the tree is down, a stump left in the ground can send up new shoots from the roots. Grinding it out below ground level stops the regrowth and gives you the space back for turf, paving or planting. See stump removal.

Qualified climbers, proper kit
Dismantling is skilled, physical work at height. It should only ever be done by trained, insured people.
Every Clearcut climber holds NPTC chainsaw and tree climbing certificates, including aerial rescue, so there is always someone on site qualified to bring a climber down. Our team are City & Guilds and Lantra qualified, we are signed up to the Forestry Safety Accord, and every job is covered by £5 million public liability insurance. Ask to see the certificates before we start.
We bring the right equipment for the job: climbing and rigging systems, lowering devices, a chipper and tipper truck to take the brash away, and a tracked stump grinder narrow enough for garden gates.
We work for homeowners, landlords, housing associations, councils, businesses and developers across Dorset and Hampshire.

What does tree dismantling cost?
Every tree is different, so we price every job on a free visit rather than from a list.
We sit in the middle on price: not the cheapest, not the dearest. You pay for qualified climbers, proper insurance and a site left clean, and the price we quote is the price you pay.
What affects the price
- The height and spread of the tree, and the species
- How close it is to buildings, cables and boundaries
- Access for the chipper, and how far the brash has to be carried
- Whether sections need roping down, or a crane
- Whether you want the stump ground out and the timber taken away
