Tree Surgery in Bridport, West Bay & the Brit Valley
Clearcut Tree Surgery serves Bridport, West Bay, Symondsbury, Burton Bradstock, Chideock, Uploders, Bradpole, Loders and the surrounding West Dorset villages. Bridport occupies the broad valley where the rivers Brit, Asker and Simene converge before reaching the English Channel at West Bay — a landscape with a distinct character quite different from the chalk downland to the east or the Purbeck limestone coast to the south-east.
The valley floor of the Brit carries mature riparian ash, willow, alder and crack willow along the river and its ditches — ash dieback is a significant issue in the Bridport area, and many riverside ash trees are showing progressive decline that warrants either structural management or safe removal before failure. The lower Brit valley between Bridport and West Bay has particular character — a narrow, sheltered coastal plain where the river meanders through grazing meadows before reaching the distinctive golden sandstone cliffs and harbour of West Bay.
West of Bridport, the landscape rises dramatically. Golden Cap — at 191 metres the highest point on the entire southern coast of England — dominates the skyline above Chideock and Seatown. The National Trust land running from Golden Cap east to Eype Down carries important coastal heathland and rough grassland. Properties on the hillsides above Chideock and in the combes running down to the sea have coastal exposure that shapes the trees growing in their gardens — south-westerly gales off the Channel are the dominant shaping force here, producing wind-flagged, one-sided crowns on exposed sycamore, ash and field maple.
Bridport's town centre is a Conservation Area, and all applications go to Dorset Council's West Dorset planning team. We manage the complete process. Call 01202 022560 for a free site visit anywhere in the Bridport area.
Brit Valley Ash DiebackAsh dieback is significant along the Brit and its tributaries. Riverside ash requires structural assessment before climbing or working beneath. We assess every affected ash tree before any work is quoted or carried out.
Coastal Exposure — Golden Cap & West BayProperties west of Bridport on the hillsides above Chideock, Seatown and Eype face prevailing south-westerly gales. Wind-flagged coastal trees require specific structural assessment before crown reduction work is planned.
Dorset AONB Landscape SensitivityThe entire Bridport area is within the Dorset AONB. Properties near the National Trust Golden Cap estate and the SSSI cliffs may have additional ecological constraints we identify at the site visit.
Conservation Area — Dorset CouncilBridport town centre has Conservation Area designation. Trees over 75mm diameter at 1.5m require six weeks' notice to Dorset Council. We identify requirements at the site visit and manage the full process.
