West Dorset valley tree surgery

Beaminster & West Dorset

The Beaminster landscape

Beaminster sits in a bowl of hills at the head of the River Brit valley — one of the most sheltered and distinctively rural towns in West Dorset. The town and its surrounding farmland lie within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the landscape characterised by the warm Ham Hill sandstone of the older buildings, deep-cut sunken lanes, ancient hedgerow oaks and the mixed woodland of the valley sides.

The tree stock here is typical of a well-wooded West Dorset valley: veteran oaks and ash on the hedgerow boundaries and meadow edges, mature orchard trees in the older gardens, willows and alders along the upper Brit and its tributaries, and a variety of larger ornamental and exotic species in the walled gardens of the town's Georgian and Victorian properties. Many of the significant trees in and around the town carry TPOs, and the historic town centre sits within a Conservation Area that extends to many surrounding trees.

Ash dieback in West Dorset

Ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) is now widespread across West Dorset. Beaminster's valley landscape, with its dense hedgerow ash populations, has been significantly affected. Ash in various stages of dieback — from early crown die-back to structural failure — is now one of the most common jobs we undertake in this area. Ash with significant dieback requires careful structural assessment before any climbing or aerial work, and we treat every ash on its merits with a full pre-work assessment.

Planning authority — Dorset Council

Beaminster and the surrounding West Dorset parishes fall under Dorset Council. All TPO applications, Conservation Area notifications and felling licence enquiries go to Dorset Council. We manage all applications directly and advise on whether prior consent is required before any quote is finalised.

Planning authority

Dorset Council — all TPO and Conservation Area applications for Beaminster and surrounding West Dorset.

Beaminster town centre has a Conservation Area designation. Trees over 75mm trunk diameter within it require six weeks' Dorset Council notification before work — even without a TPO.

The Dorset AONB designation adds landscape sensitivity to planning decisions but does not in itself restrict tree work — TPO and Conservation Area rules apply as normal.

Yes. Ash dieback is widespread across West Dorset. We carry out a full structural assessment on every affected ash before any climbing or aerial work — dieback compromises structural integrity in ways that make standard techniques unsafe. We have extensive experience with ash at all stages of dieback.
Costs depend on species, size, access and work. Rural West Dorset properties often require individual access assessment due to lane and gateway restrictions. Free site visits and written quotes. Call 01202 022560.
