Ferndown sits on the edge of one of the most ecologically sensitive landscapes in southern England. The town borders the Dorset heathlands – a nationally protected habitat that supports rare species including Dartford warblers, sand lizards and smooth snakes – and many residential properties in Ferndown and the surrounding BH22 area back directly onto heathland, woodland or the river corridors of the Stour valley to the south.

This creates a set of tree management challenges that are genuinely distinct from other parts of Dorset. Trees in Ferndown are frequently growing in the sandy, acidic, free-draining soil characteristic of the heathland edge – conditions that produce fast-growing specimens with relatively shallow root systems. The combination of fast growth, sandy soil anchorage and exposure to the south-westerly winds that track across open heathland means trees in the BH22 area can develop structural problems more quickly than might be expected, and are more vulnerable to wind-related failure than trees in heavier soil conditions.

Ferndown also has a significant number of mature garden trees in its older residential streets. Properties built in the 1960s, 70s and 80s – which make up a large portion of the housing stock in Ferndown, Hampreston and West Moors – were frequently planted with species that have now reached a size requiring professional management. Leylandii screens, mature pines, large garden oaks and ornamental cherries are among the most common trees we work on in this area.
