Totton is a large town on the western edge of Southampton, straddling the River Test at the point where it widens into the Test Estuary. Properties on the eastern side of town back onto the river corridor and associated wetland woodland — alder, crack willow, white willow and grey willow are all common riparian species here, and management near the Test's banks requires consideration of Environment Agency notification requirements.

Moving west into Calmore and Netley Marsh, the soil transitions to the New Forest fringe's acid sands — free-draining, acid and low-fertility, best suited to birch, pine, rowan and holm oak.
