What Tree Pruning Actually Involves
Pruning is the selective removal of specific branches to improve a tree’s health, structure or safety – or to manage how it interacts with the space around it. Done correctly, it extends a tree’s lifespan, reduces the risk of branch failure, and shapes the canopy without weakening the tree.
Done badly, pruning kills trees. We see it regularly in Bournemouth – heavy topping, lion-tailing, oversized cuts left to rot, the wrong work done at the wrong time of year. A poor prune can stress a tree to the point where it never recovers, and in some cases creates a more dangerous structure than the one you started with.
That’s why every job we do follows BS3998. It’s not a marketing line – it’s the standard the industry holds itself to, and the one BCP Council expect to see when we submit work applications on protected trees.
The Pruning Work We Carry Out in Bournemouth
Crown Reduction
Reducing the overall size of the canopy while keeping the tree’s natural shape. Useful when a tree has outgrown its space, is shading a property heavily, or has become top-heavy. We work to no more than around 30% reduction in a single visit — anything more stresses the tree. We’re often asked to “take half off” a tree; we’ll always explain why that’s the wrong answer before we agree to anything.
Crown Thinning
Selectively removing inner branches to allow more light and wind through the canopy. Doesn’t change the overall size or shape of the tree, but reduces the sail effect in storms and lets light through to whatever’s underneath. Common request for mature beech, sycamore and lime in Bournemouth gardens.
Crown Lifting
Removing the lower branches to raise the canopy clear of paths, driveways, lawns or buildings. The most common request we get from BCP property managers — particularly for large oaks and pines hanging over pavements or roads.
Dead Wooding
Removing dead, dying and diseased branches before they fall. Often the first job we recommend on mature trees that haven’t had professional care for years. Lower-risk than reduction work and significantly improves safety without changing how the tree looks.
Formative Pruning
Shaping a young tree’s structure so it grows well as it matures. Cheap and easy when the tree is small, expensive and damaging if left until later. If you’ve planted in the last 3-5 years it’s worth getting an arborist to take a look before the structure sets.
Pollarding
A specific technique for certain species — willow, plane, lime, some poplar. Not appropriate for most trees and we’ll tell you if it’s wrong for what you’ve got. We don’t pollard species that won’t tolerate it just because someone asks us to.
Knowing When Your Tree Needs Pruning
Most properties don’t need annual tree work. We’d rather tell you to leave a healthy tree alone than create work that isn’t needed. The clear signs that pruning is genuinely required:
- Dead or dying branches large enough to cause damage if they fall
- Branches touching or overhanging buildings, power lines or boundaries
- A tree that’s become visibly unbalanced or top-heavy
- Crossing or rubbing branches damaging each other
- Significant deadwood after a storm
- Light reduction onto a property to a problematic level
- A young tree developing poor structure that needs correcting
What’s not usually a reason on its own: a few small dead twigs (normal), seasonal leaf drop (normal), a slightly larger tree than you’d like (often better solved with crown thinning rather than reduction).
TPOs and Conservation Areas in BCP
A significant portion of central Bournemouth and surrounding areas have either Tree Preservation Orders or sit within conservation areas. The areas where we most regularly handle protected trees include Talbot Woods, Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs, Westbourne, Meyrick Park, East Cliff and West Cliff. If you’re in any of these areas, the chances are at least one of your trees has some level of protection.
What this means in practice:
- Work on a TPO tree requires a formal application to BCP Council
- Work on any tree over 7.5cm diameter in a conservation area requires 6 weeks’ notice to the council
- Carrying out work without permission can mean fines up to £20,000 per tree
- Emergency work on a dangerous tree can usually proceed but must be reported to the council afterwards
We handle the application process for our customers as part of the job. We’ve submitted hundreds of applications to BCP and know what they’ll approve, what they’ll push back on, and what they’ll refuse outright. A reduction request that’s framed badly will get refused; the same work proposed properly will go through. Knowing the difference saves time and avoids the back-and-forth.
If you’re not sure whether your tree is protected, we can check the BCP TPO and conservation area maps for you before quoting.
Tree Pruning Timing - What Works in Dorset
Different species need pruning at different times, and getting this wrong causes real damage. Some species we won’t prune outside specific windows for legitimate biological reasons:
Oak — winter only (typically October to end of March in Dorset). Outside this window there’s a real risk of oak wilt and we want to avoid the active flight period for oak processionary moth.
Cherry, plum and other Prunus species — summer pruning only, ideally July or August. Winter pruning of cherry trees risks silver leaf disease, which is fatal.
Birch and maple — late summer or early autumn. Spring pruning causes heavy sap bleed that weakens the tree.
Beech, hornbeam, lime — winter dormancy is best, though minor work can be done in mid-summer.
Apple and pear — winter for shape and structure, summer for fruit production. Different cuts for different goals.
Conifers and pines — generally only light shaping, often at any time. We avoid hard pruning of pines because they don’t regenerate from old wood.
Evergreen broadleaf (holm oak, holly, laurel) — early spring before new growth, or late summer.
If you’re unsure about timing for a specific tree, ring us before booking anything in. We’d rather delay a job by a few months than do work that damages the tree.
What Tree Pruning Costs in Bournemouth
Costs vary considerably depending on the tree, but to give you a realistic range:
- Small garden tree (under 5m), simple access — typically £150-300
- Medium tree (5-10m), straightforward crown work — typically £300-600
- Large mature tree (10m+), reduction or thinning — typically £600-1,500
- Difficult access, near buildings or power lines — adds to the cost
- TPO application — included in our quote where required
We give fixed-price quotes after seeing the tree — never per-hour, never with surprises added at the end. If we get there and it’s a bigger job than expected, we tell you before starting, not after.

Gave his expert advice and opinion, and although couldn’t do the job, due to the tree being on council highway, Max gave me the contact of the councils approved contractor to carry out a pollard. I wouldn’t hesitate in using Max for any future work at my property.
F&A
Possibly. If the tree has a TPO or sits in a conservation area, yes. If it doesn’t, generally no — though boundary trees may have implications for neighbours. We can check before any work starts.
The general guideline is no more than 30% of the canopy in a single visit. Healthy mature trees can usually take this; stressed trees, very old trees, or species like cherries should have less. We’ll always advise the maximum that’s safe for the specific tree.
Most trees respond well to proper pruning and put on healthy regrowth. Heavy reduction work changes the shape permanently — the tree will regrow but won’t return to exactly its previous form. Topping or other bad pruning can produce regrowth that’s structurally weak.
Outside the autumn storm season. Late spring through early summer (May-June) is usually our quietest period and we sometimes have flexibility on price. Avoid trying to book emergency work after a major storm — everyone’s at capacity.
Yes — £5 million public liability, £10 million employers’ liability. Certificate available on request.
