A distinctive landscape

Tree Surgery in
Bere Regis & Bere Heath

An unusual mix of tree types

Bere Regis occupies a chalk valley bottom with Bere Heath — one of the largest remaining heathland areas in Dorset — rising to the south and east. This geography creates an unusual and varied tree landscape in a small area. Village gardens follow the chalk stream character of the Bere Stream, with mature willows, alders and crack willows along the waterside. The chalk hillsides above support the spreading pedunculate oaks, ash and field maple typical of Dorset downland. And on the heathland properties to the south, an entirely different tree stock — Scots pine, Corsican pine, silver birch and veteran heathland oaks on the acid sandy soils of the Purbeck heaths.

Bere Regis village itself has some of the most characterful trees in this part of Dorset. The churchyard of St John the Baptist contains ancient yews of considerable age — the species most demanding to work with safely, requiring careful sectional dismantling and a thorough understanding of its habit. The village Conservation Area designation means many trees in the historic core require notification to Dorset Council before any work, whether TPO'd or not.

Heathland properties — different challenges

Properties on Bere Heath, Wool Heath and Bovington face a different set of challenges. Heathland soils are shallow, free-draining and nutrient-poor, which means large conifers — particularly Scots pine and Leylandii planted as windbreaks — develop wide, shallow root plates that can make felling unpredictable. Access across heathland land is often restricted, with soft ground and no hard standing. We bring appropriate equipment for the terrain and assess access requirements fully at the site visit before quoting.

Three landscapes, three approaches

The Tree Landscapes
Around Bere Regis

Village & Chalk Stream

The Bere Stream runs through the village, supporting mature willows, alders and crack willows along its banks. Chalk valley garden trees — oaks, limes, ash — many with TPOs or within the Conservation Area. All applications to Dorset Council.

Purbeck Heathland

Bere Heath and Wool Heath — acid sandy soils, Scots pine, Corsican pine, silver birch and veteran heathland oaks. Shallow root plates, restricted access, soft ground. Equipment and approach matched to the terrain.

Chalk Downland

The chalk hillsides above the village — spreading pedunculate oaks, ash, field maple and hawthorn on thin chalk soils. Downland trees require careful crown management to balance stability with canopy health.

Yes. We regularly work on heathland properties across Bere Heath, Wool Heath and Bovington. Heathland access can be challenging — soft ground, restricted entry, no hard standing — and we assess access requirements fully at the site visit and bring appropriate equipment.
Yes. Yew is one of the most challenging species to work with safely — dense wood, unpredictable branch loading and slow regrowth after heavy pruning. It requires careful sectional dismantling and species-specific management. All parts of the yew are highly toxic; we manage arisings accordingly. We carry out work on ancient and veteran yews throughout the Dorset area.
