Chandler's Ford is a substantial suburban settlement between Eastleigh and Winchester, developed primarily from the 1930s onwards on chalk and gravel soils. The older residential areas — particularly Hiltingbury — contain large established oaks, beeches and limes planted in the interwar period and now reaching considerable size. Many carry TPOs, and the Hiltingbury area sits within a Conservation Area that includes a number of the significant boundary and garden trees.

The chalk and flint soils of the Chandler's Ford area sit above a gravel terrace, producing free-draining conditions well suited to oak and beech. Trees here tend to develop good structure with deep chalk-seeking roots, and are generally robust — though the combination of chalk and periodic summer drought can stress species less adapted to alkaline conditions.
