How to Look After a Newly Planted Tree: A Step-by-Step Guide
Tree planting doesn’t end once the spade goes down — aftercare is crucial for helping your tree establish roots and grow strong.
At Clearcut Tree Surgery, we help clients across Dorset and Hampshire keep their new trees healthy with practical advice and professional care plans.
Aftercare Checklist:
1. Watering:
Water regularly in the first two years — especially in dry spells.
2. Mulching:
Add 5–10 cm of mulch around the base (but not touching the trunk) to lock in moisture and stop weeds.
3. Staking:
Stake if needed — but not too tightly. Trees need to move slightly to strengthen.
4. Pruning:
Don’t prune too soon. Remove only damaged or diseased branches in the first year.
5. Protection:
Use tree guards to stop rabbits or deer from damaging bark.
We offer tree planting and aftercare services across Dorset and Hampshire, working with landowners, schools, developers, and private clients.
