Stump Removal Across Bournemouth, Poole & Dorset

A tree stump left in your garden is more than an eyesore — it's a trip hazard, a barrier to landscaping and, depending on the species, a potential source of fungal disease that can spread to surrounding trees and shrubs. Clearcut Tree Surgery provides professional stump grinding across Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset and Hampshire, removing stumps of all sizes to a depth that allows for turfing, planting or hard landscaping above.

We use a Predator tracked stump grinder — a purpose-built machine with a rotating carbide-tipped disc that reduces the stump and its surface roots to wood chippings in situ. Unlike physically excavating a stump — which is rarely practical, extremely disruptive and often damages surrounding garden features — stump grinding is clean, fast and leaves the surrounding area essentially undisturbed.

Our Predator grinder is narrow enough to pass through a standard garden side gate (typically 700mm), making it suitable for the vast majority of domestic gardens across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset where larger machinery cannot operate. The machine is tracked rather than wheeled, so it causes minimal damage to lawns even in wet conditions.

After grinding, the resulting chippings can be used as backfill, removed from site entirely, or repurposed as garden mulch — we agree the outcome at the time of quoting. Call 01202 022560 for a free no-obligation quote anywhere in Dorset.

Stump Grinding —
From Quote to Clear Ground

01

Free Site Assessment

We visit your property, measure the stump, assess access for the Predator grinder and check for any underground utilities nearby. You receive a written quote — no hidden charges based on what we find on the day.

02

Utility Check

Before grinding begins, we identify any known underground services — water pipes, drainage, electricity cables and telecoms — that may run near the stump. We discuss depth and approach accordingly, and advise where a utility strike survey may be recommended.

03

Stump Ground Out

The Predator grinder is positioned over the stump and works systematically across the stump face, grinding in overlapping passes to the agreed depth. All surface roots within the grinding radius are also reduced. The operation takes 30–90 minutes for most domestic stumps.

04

Site Left as Agreed

Chippings backfilled into the hole, raked level and the surrounding area swept clean. Or chippings removed entirely if preferred. Lawn mats replaced if used to protect surrounding turf. Your garden is left ready for the next stage.

Not All Stumps
Are the Same

The species of the tree has a direct bearing on how a stump behaves after grinding. Hardwood stumps — oak, beech, ash — are denser and take longer to grind, but are less likely to regenerate once the main root mass is destroyed. Softwood stumps — pine, spruce, leylandii — grind faster but the resinous wood can be more abrasive on machinery.

The greatest regrowth risk comes from certain broadleaf species that can regenerate vigorously from remaining side roots even after the main stump is removed. Sycamore, cherry, willow and poplar are the main offenders in Dorset and Bournemouth's gardens. For these species, we apply a professional stump treatment herbicide to the freshly ground surface immediately after grinding — this is absorbed into the remaining root system and prevents regrowth.

Stump treatment is a separate, optional service. We advise whether it is recommended for your specific species and situation at the time of the site visit. View our stump treatment service for more information.

Regrowth Risk by Species

High regrowth risk — treatment recommendedSycamore, willow, poplar, cherry, silver birch, elder. These species will regenerate from side roots if not treated.
Medium regrowth risk — monitor after grindingAsh, lime, sweet chestnut, hornbeam. Less likely to regenerate but worth monitoring for 6–12 months after grinding.
Low regrowth risk — grinding sufficientOak, beech, pine, spruce, fir, leylandii. Once the main stump is ground out, regrowth from remaining roots is uncommon.

Things to Know
Before Stump Grinding

Stump grinding is straightforward in most garden situations — but a few factors are worth considering before we arrive on site.

Underground Services

Water pipes, drainage, gas lines, electricity cables and telecoms ducts can run close to tree root systems. We carry out a visual assessment before grinding and discuss depth accordingly. For stumps close to known services, we recommend a utility strike survey before work begins. This is your responsibility to commission but we can advise on providers.

Access & Ground Conditions

Our Predator grinder passes through access of approximately 700mm — the width of a standard side gate. If access is narrower than this, we assess alternative routes or whether the gate can be temporarily removed. Soft or waterlogged ground may require protective matting to avoid damaging your lawn — we carry this on the machine.

Settlement After Grinding

The hole left after grinding is backfilled with wood chippings and soil from the grinding process. This material will settle and compact over the following months as it decomposes. If you are planning to turf or pave directly over the area, we recommend checking the ground level 3–6 months after grinding and adding a top-up of soil if needed before final surfacing.

After Stump Grinding —
What Can You Do With the Space?

Once your stump is ground to below surface level, the space opens up to a range of uses. The choice affects how we leave the site — we discuss this at the quoting stage so the finish is right for what you have planned.

Most Bournemouth and Dorset customers want to either turf over the area, plant a new tree or shrub, or incorporate the space into hard landscaping. Each has a slightly different requirement in terms of grinding depth and backfill material.

For replanting with a new tree close to the same position, we always recommend discussing the species choice first — certain root pathogens from the previous tree can affect some species. We advise on this at the time of the site visit.

Turf or SeedStandard grinding depth (150–200mm) is sufficient. Backfill chippings with topsoil and allow 3–6 months settlement before turfing for the best result.
Replant a New Tree or ShrubGrinding to 250–300mm recommended to remove the main root competition zone. Advise on species compatibility — some are sensitive to soil pathogens left by specific previous species.
Hard Landscaping — Paving or DeckingRequires grinding to 250–300mm and removal of all chippings from the hole, replaced with compactable material. Discuss with your landscaper before we grind to ensure the specification matches their requirements.
Leave as Garden Feature or Mulch BedGrinding is optional in this case — stump treatment to prevent regrowth may be more appropriate. Discuss with us at the site visit and we'll advise on the best approach.

"Large sycamore stump — Clearcut advised on the treatment to stop regrowth, applied it on the day. Six months on and no signs of shooting at all. Would have been a nightmare without that advice. Very professional."

Stump grinding uses a rotating disc with carbide teeth to reduce the stump to wood chippings in situ, to a depth of 150–300mm below ground. The stump is not physically lifted out. True excavation of the complete root system is rarely practical in domestic gardens. Stump grinding is the standard professional method and is sufficient for turfing, planting and most paving projects.

Chippings can be backfilled into the hole as standard, removed from site entirely, or used as garden mulch. We agree what happens to the chippings at the quoting stage. Backfilled chippings will settle over the following months as they decompose — check the level and top up with soil before final turfing or planting if needed.
