Heathland edge tree surgery
Tree Surgery in
West Moors & East Dorset
On the edge of the heathland
West Moors sits at the northern edge of the East Dorset heathland belt — the same acid sandy landscape that runs through Ferndown, Ringwood Forest and up towards the New Forest. Properties here have a distinctive tree stock shaped by that heathland character: mature Scots pine and silver birch on the older residential plots, veteran oaks that predate the twentieth-century development, and an increasing variety of ornamental species in newer gardens.
The proximity of Ferndown Forest to the west and Holt Heath National Nature Reserve to the north gives the area an ecological sensitivity that matters for tree work. Bat roosts in mature pine and oak are not uncommon in this part of East Dorset, and we carry out pre-work bat roost assessments on any tree with suitable habitat before work begins.
Heathland soils and tree stability
The acid sandy soils of the East Dorset heathland are free-draining and nutrient-poor. Scots pines on these soils develop wide, shallow root plates — structurally different from the same species on clay. This affects how a tree should be assessed for safety and how felling or dismantling should be approached. We assess root system character at the site visit and quote accordingly.
Planning authority — Dorset Council
West Moors falls within Dorset Council — not BCP, despite being geographically close to Ferndown, which is also Dorset Council. All TPO applications and Conservation Area work go to Dorset Council. The Dorset/Hampshire border runs just to the north and east — properties in Ringwood or Fordingbridge cross into NFDC territory, but West Moors itself is firmly Dorset Council.
