Lyndhurst is inside the New Forest National Park boundary. All TPO applications and Conservation Area notifications go to the New Forest National Park Authority (NFNPA), not New Forest District Council. Submitting to the wrong authority is a common mistake — it delays your application and can mean work starts without valid consent. We confirm the correct authority at every site visit.
Lyndhurst — the administrative centre and largest village of the New Forest — sits at the heart of the National Park. Its mature tree stock reflects the mixed character of the Forest: veteran oaks on open woodland pasture, beech pollards on the forest edge, and a variety of ornamental and exotic species in the older residential gardens lining the routes into the village. Many of these trees are subject to TPOs or fall within Conservation Area boundaries covering the village centre.
The NFNPA takes a particularly active role in protecting the landscape character of the Park, including its trees. Applications to fell or significantly reduce prominent trees are assessed against the Park's Landscape Character Area guidance. Replacement planting conditions are more commonly applied than in district council areas. We advise at the outset on what the NFNPA is likely to consent to for a given tree and location — so you have realistic expectations before the application is submitted.
Trees in and around Lyndhurst exist in a unique ecological context. The New Forest's Ancient and Ornamental woodlands contain some of the oldest trees in England — veteran pollard beeches and oaks that are centuries old.
