Eastleigh town grew rapidly in the late Victorian and Edwardian era around its railway works, and its older residential streets reflect that heritage — mature lime and cherry avenues, established garden oaks and horse chestnuts that are now large enough to carry TPOs and sit within Conservation Areas around the town's historic core. The newer residential areas around the town's edges have a more mixed tree stock, with a variety of ornamental species planted from the 1970s onwards now reaching significant size.

The River Itchen runs to the west of the town through a green corridor connecting Bishopstoke to the south with the watermeadows north of the M3. Trees along this corridor — alder, crack willow, white willow, grey willow — are some of the most significant in the borough from an ecological standpoint. Itchen riparian tree work requires awareness of Environment Agency byelaws governing vegetation on this chalk river, in addition to any Eastleigh Borough Council planning requirements.

All tree planning in the Eastleigh area falls under Eastleigh Borough Council — not Southampton City Council, despite the proximity of the city boundary. Hedge End, Botley, Fair Oak, West End and Bishopstoke are all within Eastleigh Borough. Chandler's Ford (north of the M3) falls under Test Valley Borough Council. We confirm the correct authority at every site visit.
