Tree Surgeons Covering
All of Dorset

Clearcut Tree Surgery Ltd provides professional tree surgery across the whole of Dorset — a county that spans more varied landscapes than almost anywhere in England. From the urban density of Bournemouth and Poole in the east, through the heathlands of East Dorset, across the chalk downlands of North Dorset and the Cranborne Chase, down to the dairy farming Blackmore Vale and the ancient ridge and vale landscape of West Dorset, to the limestone and clay of the Jurassic Coast — each landscape presents different tree species, different challenges and different planning considerations.

Our NPTC-qualified team has direct experience working across every part of Dorset — from high-density residential gardens in Bournemouth to remote farmland in the Marshwood Vale, from the riverside willows of the Stour and Frome to the ancient parkland oaks of the chalk escarpment. We carry £5 million public liability insurance and carry out all work to British Standard BS3998.

Dorset has two planning authorities for tree work. Dorset Council covers the majority of the county — all rural Dorset, market towns, villages and smaller settlements. BCP Council covers only Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch. We have direct experience managing Tree Preservation Order applications and Conservation Area notifications with both authorities.

Call 01202 022560 for a free no-obligation quote anywhere across Dorset. We cover the whole county — no area excluded.

Why whole-county experience matters
Different landscape typesChalk, clay, heathland and limestone soils all produce different tree species with different felling and access requirements. We understand all of them.
Two planning authoritiesDorset Council and BCP Council have different processes and timescales. Knowing which authority covers your property is essential before any work begins.
Rural access equipmentWest and North Dorset's rural properties require machinery capable of working on steep slopes, remote land and sites with no road access. We have it.
Watercourse considerationsThe Frome, Stour, Piddle, Allen and Blackwater all run through Dorset. Riverside trees often need Environment Agency notification alongside council consent.

One County,
Six Distinct
Landscapes

Dorset is not a uniform county. The geology, soil type and land use vary dramatically from east to west — and so does the tree stock. Understanding the landscape is understanding the tree work.

East Dorset Heathland

The heathlands around Ferndown, West Moors, Verwood and Bere Heath are a remnant of the ancient Dorset heath described by Thomas Hardy. Sandy, acidic soils support Scots pine, silver birch, Corsican pine and heather. Tree surgery in this landscape means dealing with deep-rooted conifers, narrow residential access and Conservation areas protecting the heathland character.

Ferndown · West Moors · Verwood · St Leonards · Bere Heath

Chalk Downland

Dorset's chalk runs in a broad band from the Hampshire border through Cranborne Chase, past Blandford Forum and Dorchester to the coast at Lulworth. Ancient beech hangers, ash and oak grow on the thin chalky soils of the escarpments; the valley bottoms support mature willows, alders and crack willows along the chalk streams. Many trees are ancient and carry TPOs. The Cranborne Chase AONB adds landscape planning sensitivity.

Blandford Forum · Dorchester · Shaftesbury · Sixpenny Handley · Tollard Royal

Stour & Frome Valleys

The River Stour runs the length of Dorset from Gillingham to Christchurch, and the Frome from Dorchester to Poole Harbour. The flood meadows, water meadows and riverside woodlands of these valleys contain willows, alders, ash and black poplar — many of significant ecological value. Work near these watercourses may require both Dorset Council and Environment Agency notification.

Blandford Forum · Wimborne · Sturminster Newton · Wareham · Dorchester

Blackmore Vale & West Dorset

The clay vales of the Blackmore Vale and the complex ridge-and-vale landscape of West Dorset — Beaminster, Bridport, Sherborne — support dense hedgerow oaks, ancient parkland trees and the hollow lanes fringed with veteran ash and field maple typical of this pastoral landscape. Many parishes in this area have active AONB and Landscape Character policies that inform how tree work is approached.

Beaminster · Bridport · Sherborne · Sturminster Newton · Cerne Abbas

Jurassic Coast & Purbeck

The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site from Studland to Lyme Regis includes limestone cliffs, chalk headlands and clay undercliff. Purbeck's heathland, stone meadows and coastal woodland create a unique tree stock — wind-shaped coastal oaks, Monterey cypress and holm oak exposed to salt-laden winds, and the specialist scrub woodland of the undercliff. Planning sensitivity is high throughout the UNESCO World Heritage corridor.

Wareham · Swanage · Corfe Castle · Lulworth · Wool

Urban Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch

The conurbation of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch has a mature urban forest — significant in its own right, with many trees in TPO-heavy Conservation Areas and mature residential streets. The BCP Council area has its own planning framework, distinct from rural Dorset, and a dense population of Victorian and Edwardian tree planting in Talbot Woods, Branksome and Bournemouth's Victorian parks.

Tree Permissions
Across Dorset
Two Authorities

Understanding which planning authority covers your property is the first step before any tree work in Dorset. Getting this wrong can lead to submitting applications to the wrong council, causing delays — or worse, carrying out work without the correct consent.

Dorset Council was formed in 2019 from the merger of six former councils: Dorset County Council, North Dorset, West Dorset, Purbeck, Weymouth & Portland, and East Dorset. The result is a single authority covering the majority of the county — all rural Dorset, market towns, Weymouth, Swanage, Sherborne and all settlements not in the BCP area.

BCP Council was also formed in 2019 from the merger of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch councils. It covers the urban conurbation only — Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and their surrounding residential areas.

Clearcut Tree Surgery has direct working experience with both authorities — their TPO registers, their application processes and their typical turnaround times. We advise on which council covers your property at the site visit, and manage all applications and notifications on your behalf from start to approval.

Near Sherborne, West Dorset

"Cottage in the Purbeck AONB — Clearcut came all the way from Bournemouth, assessed our trees carefully given the AONB setting, and carried out the work professionally. They clearly understood the landscape sensitivity of the area."

Sandra H.

If you're in Bournemouth, Poole or Christchurch, your tree planning authority is BCP Council. Everywhere else in Dorset — including Ferndown, Wimborne, Blandford, Dorchester, Weymouth, Bridport, Wareham, Swanage and all rural areas — is covered by Dorset Council. We confirm which authority covers your property at the initial site visit.
Yes. We work throughout Dorset's AONB landscapes — including the Cranborne Chase & West Wiltshire Downs AONB and the Dorset AONB which covers much of West and South Dorset. AONB designation adds landscape sensitivity to planning decisions but does not prevent routine tree surgery. We advise on all relevant considerations during the site visit.
Yes. Trees near the River Frome, Piddle, Stour, Allen, Blackwater or other Dorset watercourses may require Environment Agency notification alongside any Dorset Council TPO consent. We identify all relevant consents during the site visit and manage all applications — including EA notifications — on your behalf.
Costs vary depending on the tree's size, species, access and type of work. Rural properties in West and North Dorset often have larger, more mature trees than suburban gardens — which affects pricing. We provide free no-obligation site visits and written quotes for all jobs across Dorset. Call 01202 022560 to arrange your visit.
